Summer Picnic and Movie Night for all ages in the PLC

Friday, August 6th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and join us for a movie night (Movie TBA). Bring snacks or picnic food for you or your family, and we will provide popcorn and soda. Hope to see you all there for this great time!

Type 1 Support Group Meet

The Greater Illinois Area Type 1 Diabetes Support Group will hold a back-to-school workshop in the Adult Meeting Room here at St. John’s from 1-2:30 p.m. Sunday, August 15. Diabetes 101: Success Strategies for School is designed for children affected by diabetes and their families. Tips for developing written plans, effectively managing blood sugars in and out of the classroom, and communicating between home, health care team, and school will be shared. Deanna Lohman, RN, BSN, CDE, and Certifed Insulin Pump Trainer, will speak, along with student athletes Patrick Ambrose and Mallory Beck. New Disciples’ Class

Our next New Disciples’ Class will be on Sunday, August 22 from 12 noon-5:00 p.m. for anyone interested in becoming a member here at St. John’s. The afternoon begins with lunch in the PLC Lobby and continues with an afternoon of conversation with St. John’s pastors about what it means to be a Lutheran Christian in the world and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus here at St. John’s. New disciples will be received into the life of the congregation the weekend of August 28-29. If interested in being part of this upcoming class, please let either Pastor Olson or Pastor Greg know.

Lemonade in the Lobby – August

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, August 25, for our last Lemonade in the Lobby series for this summer. The Sangamon Brass Quintet will be playing for us. This group features two of our members – Aaron Duncan and Jeff Koester. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Wedding Anniversary Invite

Mr. and Mrs. Ken Underwood will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, August 29. They invite the St. John’s congregation to join them in the Parish Life Center from 2 - 4:00 p.m., beginning with a special blessing and welcome, followed by a reception.

Rally Day 2010

Circle the date of September 12 on your calendars! Rally Day 2010 takes place on this day! Rally Day is the offcial kick-off of the Christian Education year St. John’s, including Sunday School, Adult Forum, Sprout!, and Confrmation, and all of the choirs as well. Connecting with Christ As We Commemorate Our 140 Years

Our Anniversary Banquet will be held at the Northfield Center on Sunday, September 26 at 1 p.m. A special feature of the Banquet will be a DVD involving a significant number of interviews of members of St. John’s. We thank Elaine Birtch and Ted Schurter for their countless hours contributed in the development of this special DVD. Those attending the Banquet will receive a copy of the DVD. Make plans to be part of this memorable event on Sunday, September 26, 1 p.m. at the Northfield Center.

It’s Coming! Faith Conference II

Mark your calendars! Faith Conference 2 will take place here at St. John’s October 7-8. This year’s theme is Connecting in Christ: Home, Church, Neighbor. The conference will feature Keynote Presenter Pastor Rich Melheim, founder and chief executive offcer of Faith Inkubators, a Christian education systems design think tank and resource provider dedicated to “incubating faith every night in every home.” If you remember hearing about the Faith 5 – “Every night in every home!” – you know what Pastor Melheim is all about! An ordained Lutheran pastor, entrepreneur, author, speaker, playwright, songwriter, family counselor, business systems consultant, amateur complexity theorist, log cabin builder, preschool designer, cartoonist, and student of the human brain, Melheim is passionate about connecting church and home. Melheim is a powerful speaker dedicated to making his audience laugh, cry, and think.
