Meals on Wheels

St. John’s Lutheran Church will be delivering Meals on Wheels the weeks of August 16, through September 10. Drivers are needed for this time period. Please call Doris Riecks, 522.5225, chairman of this project at St. John’s Lutheran Church, to schedule your day(s) or for any questions you may have.

The time required is about 45 min. to 1 hour. On your scheduled day(s), you will report to the Red Cross representative at Memorial Medical Center loading dock located at the north side of Miller Street, just east of Rutledge, by 11:15 a.m. to pick up your route list with map instructions, the insulated containers with food trays and deliver to addresses on your route. When completed, return the empty containers to the Red Cross Offce, 1045 Outer Park Drive, (red & white shed on east side of their parking lot.) If questions while on your route, call the Red Cross Rep at 787-7602, ext. 237.

The Meals on Wheels program relies heavily on volunteers from the various churches. Without our assistance many people would go hungry each day! If you can help in this very worthwhile program, please fill in the information on the right cut out and place in the Offering Plate or return to the office.

Interesting in Becoming a Mentor?

Are you interested in serving as a mentor to a young child at Harvard Park Elementary School? Join a group of dedicated mentors from St. John’s as they provide this weekly ministry of encouragement and positive relationship building with children right here in our own community. An informational meeting will be held for all those currently serving as mentors and all those interested in learning more about this exciting ministry on Thursday, August 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the Adult Meeting Room. A light supper will be provided. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Pastor Greg (pbusboom@stjohns-springfeld.org). A training session for new mentors will be provided by District 186 on September 14.

August Apple Tree Project

Starting in August, there will be a tree in the Narthex and the PLC lobby with envelopes with apples on them. This year the students at Harvard Park Elementary School will be required to wear uniforms. We are hoping to help the students of lower income and single parent families purchase these uniforms for their children. The school administrators have received a grant from Walmart, where they can purchase a uniform for a child for around $10. On our trees you will fnd apples with $10 on them or even blank ones so you can help out as best you can. Please take the apple from the tree, place your cash or check made out to St. John’s in the envelope and place them in the offering plate. All monies collected will go to Harvard Park Elementary and they in turn will distribute a voucher for the uniforms. We can’t tell you how grateful people are for your help. Thank you so much in advance for your help.

School and Backpack Project for July

Starting in July the social ministry committee will start collecting School Supplies and backpacks for the homeless and Harvard Park Elementary School. Last year we were able to ill close to 100 backpacks with supplies for grades K thru 5th. We are so blessed at St. John’s and we thank you for sharing your blessings with those who do not have as much. A list of supplies needed will be posted on the shopping carts in both the narthex and the PLC. July is when all the school supplies start to go on sale, so please keep this project in mind when you see them in the stores. Yes, we will also take gently used backpacks. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Knitting

Knitting on Sundays will resume after Memorial Day, on Sunday, June 6. Join us between services in the PLC Lobby. Knitting knowledge is not required—we can offer instruction! We plan to knit washcloths/dishcloths for the Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery’s Holiday Store. Please watch for sales at local shops for cotton yarn to knit these cloths. If you have any questions, call Lynne Ewan at 546-9632 (home), 414-4449 (cell) or email her at lynne.ewan@sbcglobal.net

Food Pantry Items

The Grace Food Pantry could use your help with donations of tinned fruit. Foods that are needed anytime include soups, spaghetti sauce, cereals, box mixes such as hamburger helper, rice type boxes, tea and hot chocolate.

Illinois Storybook Ministry

Volunteers take children's books into Illinois prisons and have the parent read the story onto a tape or CD. The book along with the recording is sent to the child to make a connection between them. Time commitment is three to six hours one day per month. Also, new children's books are always needed.

Office Volunteers

Assist with answering the phone, greeting visitors, filing, folding, and collating bulletins and announcement inserts, and assimilation of congregational mailings. Time commitment is half a day per week.
