Sunday Sanctuary Service 10:30 am (Summer 9:45 am)

Our 10:30 am Sunday Sanctuary Service is a traditional service using liturgies from Evangelical Lutheran Worship and With One Voice. Communion is celebrated on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of each month, every Sunday during Advent, Christmas and Easter and on Festival Sundays. During the summer months of June, July and August this service begins at 9:45 am.

Sunday Contemporary Service in the Parish Life Center 10:30 am

This Sunday service is a contemporary service in our Parish Life Center with weekly communion. Led by our Praise Band/Choir this service features contemporary music, multi-media worship and a more casual atmosphere.

Additional worship services are held on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday of Holy Week, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and each Wednesday during Lent. Thanksgiving Eve worship is held in conjunction with other ELCA congregations in Springfield.

In the Sanctuary Services large print worship bulletins are available. In both the Sanctuary and Parish Life Center worship services assistive listening devices are available. CDs are available of the Sanctuary Services.

Needed: Bread Bakers!

During the season of Easter, the Worship and Music Committee would like to use real, home-baked bread for Communion at both the 5:00 p.m. Sanctuary and 10:30 a.m. Contemporary Services. If you are interested in helping bake bread for this new worship ministry, please contact either Pastor Greg (pbusboom@stjohns-springield.org) or Ruthie Steen (sailbvi4@msn.com). Special communion bread recipes are available upon request. Jesus says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). In offering real bread for communion, we extend God’s gracious hospitality in offering the very best that we have to God’s people as they “taste and see” (Psalm 34:8) the goodness of God. Thank you for your consideration!

Opportunities to Help in Worship

Readers are needed at each of the of the four weekend services and special services throughout the year.

Communion Assistants are needed at three weekend services. A team of one or two is needed Saturday evening, and a team of four for two Sunday services.

Positions are available assisting the paid Nursery Attendant while parents attend worship and participate in Sunday School. Also needed for weekly meetings and special congregational activities.

Sponsors are needed for new disciples, to help acclimate and provide support for these new friends. Sponsors are invited to participate in the new Disciple's Luncheon.

Children at Worship

As you look around the Sanctuary at any service, you will see that children are part of our worshipping community. Their presence here grows out of the Biblical tradition and conviction that children are members of the worshipping community. We make room for children in our worship by having a time for children, making sure that worship activity bulletins are available and by scheduling events throughout the year where children can use the gifts which God has provided them and share them with all worshipping. Your children are always welcome at our worship.

Music

St. John's has been especially blessed with an unusually strong and versatile music program. In all of our worship services – traditional and contemporary – we are assisted by a variety of musical expressions which include: Chancel Choir, Bells of Glory [Adult Hand Bells], Children's Vocal and Chime Choirs, Women's Ensemble, Hosanna! [a cappella group of 12 members], Men's Ensemble, instrumentalists and soloists. In addition each week in our Contemporary Service in the Parish Life Center we have a gifted Praise Band/Choir composed of guitarists, percussionists, keyboardist, and a weekly vocal leadership group of 24 members, 5 to 6 of which sing each week. Rehearsals for all these musical groups are held weekly – please check with our Director of Music – Jean Welch at 793-3933 – for times.
