Philippians 2:1-3 (ESV)

Christ's Example of Humility

2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Recently I attended a church leadership retreat. The event had been prepared by our St. John’s pastors; those in attendance were Vision Team leaders or members of our congregation’s Leadership Board. We spent the morning thinking about and discussing our congregation’s strengths and weaknesses, along with our current and upcoming challenges and opportunities. Then we were invited to speak about what God is doing at St. John’s, based on all the items we had listed on the whiteboard.

One statement that was offered in response was that God is calling us to present a united front to the world. God is calling us through our different worship styles, through our neighborhood ministry, through our preschool, and through all of our programming to overcome our differences and remember that we are united in Christ’s love. The world is a very divided place. People are searching for answers, for truth, for acceptance. As Christians, we cannot help to heal the world if we are divided in our own household.

In today’s reading from Philippians Paul encourages us to be united in our thoughts. We are to be of one spirit and of one mind. It became clear over the course of the retreat that the lay leaders of St. John’s are united in our thoughts about where our congregation is going. It is our prayer that every disciple at St. John’s will stand united with us in Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit and help us continue to reach out to the world around us.

Dear Lord, send your Spirit to unite all of our hearts and minds. Help us to put aside our differences and stand together in your love so that we may effectively minister to those in need. In your name we pray, Amen.
