Matthew 24:29-31

The Coming of the Son of Man

29 “Immediately after the suffering of those days

the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from heaven,
    and the powers of heaven will be shaken.

30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Signs have been a common theme in our recent Scripture readings. Today we read, “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven.” Here is yet another sign that Jesus is coming back for us and that he is preparing a room for us. This time the sign will be in the form of angels and trumpets, not unlike those God showed when Jesus was born. Advent is full of signs and symbols. We have angels, stars, trees, candles, and, of course, the nativity itself. All of these signs remind us of the true reason for the season. Jesus was born for us, died for us, and will come back for us! Do you need more signs? Why not join us for one of our preschool Christmas programs here at St. John’s or at your own local congregation? I promise that you will see signs everywhere that Jesus is coming back. Why else would he gift us with these precious children sharing the story of his birth if not to prepare us for his return?

Dear Jesus, as we enter into this Advent season and anticipate the celebration of your birth help us remember that an even greater celebration is waiting for us when you return. Amen.
