Pentecost 22

“[Jesus said to the disciples,] ‘But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all’” (Mark 10:43-44).

What could God make happen in and through St. John’s if each and every ONE of us grew our giving to St. John’s in 2019 by just ONE? This question serves as the theme of this year’s fall stewardship campaign as we prepare to make our commitments of time, talents, treasure, and touch for the coming year.

Just imagine what God could make happen if each ONE of us gave just ONE additional percent of our annual income to St. John’s! In 2017, the median household income in Sangamon County was just over $56,000. To date here at St. John’s in 2018, we have 455 active giving households in the congregation. Assuming that the median household income in our congregation is comparable to the median household income of our county, an additional ONE percent in giving would mean an average increase of $560 in annual giving per household (an increase of just over $10 per week!). If our 455 active giving households each increased their annual giving by an average of $560, the increase in giving to our General Operating Fund would be $254,800! Just imagine what God could make happen in and through our congregation with an additional $254,800! And, all it would take to make that happen would be each of us increasing our giving by ONE!

What would we do with an additional $254,800? The answer . . . we would keep on doing what we are currently doing, namely, SERVING! An additional $254,800 would allow us to increase our missionary sponsorship in Madagascar or perhaps sponsor an additional missionary, grow our annual mission trip experience (perhaps even internationally!), more generously support Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, Lutheran Outdoor Ministries, and Lutheran Campus Ministry, hire a full-time youth director to grow our ministry to our 7th-12th grade youth, explore the possibility of starting a satellite ministry site in one of our surrounding communities such as Rochester, Chatham, Sherman, Athens, or Pleasant Plains, begin a music outreach ministry to underserved children in District 186, hire a full-time parish nurse to care for our aging population in our congregation and beyond . . . the possibilities are nearly endless! And, all it would take to make this happen is for each and every ONE to increase their giving by ONE!

I invite you. Please read through the information carefully that was included in your 2019 Stewardship Packet that you either picked up at worship last weekend or that you received in the mail this past week. Then, prayerfully consider how God might be calling you to increase your giving to our General Operating Fund by ONE. Finally, complete the commitment card included in your packet and bring it with you to worship on Commitment Weekend, November 10-11. What could God make happen in and through St. John’s if each and every ONE of us grew our giving to St. John’s in 2019 by just ONE? The answer . . . COME AND SEE!
