“Then [Jesus] said to them, ‘The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath’”
One of my favorite things about summer is cooking out. I love sitting outside with family and friends telling stories and smelling the aroma of great food cooking on the grill. There’s nothing better. Over these summer months, I try to cook out as much as I possibly can.
Since the summer of 2014, we here at St. John’s have the wonderful tradition of cooking out together on the church lawn at 6:00 p.m. each Wednesday from June through mid-August. In addition to the smell (and taste!) of great food cooking on the grill, these weekly cookouts provide us with the opportunity simply to be together—with each other and with our neighbors. It is a great way to get to know one another and to grow in relationship.
Here’s how it works. Each week,
a different small group, ministry team, or group of individuals volunteers to prepare the main dish (funds are available to purchase the food). Then, everyone brings a side dish, salad, or dessert to share. We provide everything else—the drinks, the serving ware, even the entertainment. Following the meal together, we provide some sort of fun activity each week that engages both children and adults. The whole thing ends by 7:30. How easy is that!
It all starts this coming Wednesday, June 6 at 6:00 p.m. under the big white tent on the lawn north of the PLC. The church staff will be grilling up hot dogs. You all bring the sides. After we eat, there will be fun games and activities on the lawn. Just come! Come and enjoy a delicious meal! Come and enjoy gathering with your sisters and brothers in Christ! Come and enjoy getting to know our neighbors! Come and help us grow in our congregation’s vision to grow in meaningful relationships with Christ, with each other, and with our community as we are gathered for worship, equipped for discipleship, and sent to care!
Let’s cookout together this summer! See you Wednesday!
In Christ’s Welcome +
