“O fear the Lord, you his holy ones, for those who fear him have no want. The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing”
Next Sunday, August 26, our congregation will gather for a Special Congregational Meeting at 11:15 a.m. in the Parish Life Center to decide how best to move forward with the building renovation project. At the five informational forums held over this past week (the fifth and final forum will be held this Sunday at 11:15 in the AMR), the leadership has presented three possible options. These forums have been well-attended and we have received much helpful feedback from the congregation. Thank you to all who have participated in this process and for all of the input that has been shared. It has been a healthy and productive conversation.
It is now up to the Leadership Board to sort through all of the information that has been shared and to make a recommendation to the congregation for our consideration. The Leadership Board is in the process of reviewing all of the surveys that have been returned, as well as the notes from each of the forums. This Monday evening, the Leadership Board will meet to form their recommendation. On Tuesday, a letter will go in the mail to the entire congregation informing us of their recommendation which we will then consider at the congregational meeting on Sunday. Please read through the letter carefully and prayerfully. Please be present to participate in the meeting next Sunday. Please join with us in seeking God’s will and not our will.
How do we make such a difficult decision, balancing our need for both additional hospitality and office space with the reality of the financial resources we have available? How do we balance our bold vision for the future with our responsibility to be wise stewards? How do we discern what we need from what we want? The answers to these questions are not easy ones.
The mission of our congregation is to be and make disciples of Christ, in response to God’s grace. It is this mission that needs to lead and guide us in our discernment and decision-making. It is this mission that serves as the plumb line for which direction we should go. It is this mission that we have been called by God to live into through both our words and our actions. How can we most fully be the disciples of Christ that God has called us to be? How can we most fully make disciples as Christ has commanded us? How can we most fully respond to God’s grace as we move forward together into God’s future?
The decision before us is not our decision. It is God’s decision. May we, together, pray, listen, and then act as God wills for us, whatever that will may be.
