“[Jesus] sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, ‘Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all’” (Mark 9:35).
Pastor and author Frederick Buechner defines our calling in the world as that place where our greatest gift meets the world’s greatest need. God has created each one of us unique, gifting us with unique talents for service in the world. As St. Paul describes in several of his New Testament letters, to some God has given the gift of teaching, to others the gift of encouragement, to still others the gift of service, the list goes on and on. True joy comes when we discover how our unique giftedness can be used to help and serve others.
This weekend here at St. John’s, Kristen Schmid Schurter, our Director of Spiritual Gifts Ministries, is leading a Spiritual Gifts Workshop on Sunday morning from 9:15-10:15 a.m. in the Adult Meeting Room (AMR) for all who want to learn more about how God might be calling them to serve. I invite and encourage you to participate. It is important for us as individual disciples of Jesus. It is important for us as a congregation. It is important for the work of Christ’s kingdom.
In several weeks we will be kicking off our annual fall stewardship campaign as we prepare to make our commitments of time, talents, and treasure for the coming year. This fall’s campaign theme is Come and See what ONE can do! Just imagine how fulfilling your life could be once you discover that ONE way in which you were created by God to serve! Just imagine how alive our congregation could be if each of us found just ONE way in which we could use our gifts to serve in and through St. John’s! Just imagine what a difference we Christians could make in the world if each of us discovered just ONE way in which we could serve others in our community!
What is your ONE gift? How are YOU being called to use that ONE gift to serve? Come to the Spiritual Gifts Workshop this weekend. Then, look for the newly designed Time and Talents survey that will be part of your Stewardship Packet in a couple weeks. Fill it out. Return it. Then, come and see how God will use your unique gifts to help us live out our mission to be and make disciples of Christ, in response to God’s grace!
