Lent 2

“I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”

(Psalm 27:13-14).

One of the many insights that Susan Beaumont shares in her book Inside the Large Congregation is that staff transitions are a constant. In large congregations with a relatively large staff such as St. John’s, there is seldom a time when we are not either welcoming a new staff member or saying good-bye to a staff member. With each staff transition, there is both grief and opportunity.

Sadly, Tucker Good, our Director of Media and Communications, and Sam Neahring Good, our Director of Children and Family Ministries, have announced that they will be relocating to Salt Lake City, Utah in mid-April, where Sam has accepted a new teaching position. Tucker and Sam’s last day here at St. John’s will be Sunday, April 7.

Both Tucker and Sam have been tremendous assets to our congregation’s ministry during their time with us. First as Interim Director of Youth and Family Ministries and, most recently, as Director of Media and Communications, Tucker has greatly increased the professional look of our print and social media communications, has grown our social media presence, has been instrumental in helping to create a “St. John’s brand” through our new logo, has been responsible for the creativity and quality of our recent Connect videos, and has been solely responsible for the popular live-streaming of our weekly worship services. In her role as Director of Children and Family Ministries, Sam has provided faithful and creative leadership for Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, has grown our outreach with our neighborhood children, especially at DuBois Elementary School, has provided solid leadership for our nursery, and has been instrumental in beginning our pre-teen ministry for our 5th and 6th grade youth. I am most thankful for all the ministry that both Tucker and Sam have shared with us. Their moving leaves us with two incredibly important positions to fill.

Please know that the Personnel Committee and Leadership Board are already hard at work seeking to fill these two positions. While we recognize the need to fill these two positions as expediently as possible, we also want to make sure that we fill them with the best candidates possible. Interim plans are underway to ensure that all of the ministries that Tucker and Sam are responsible for continue until their positions have been filled. In the meantime, I ask for your prayers and your patience as we juggle their various responsibilities and as we begin the search process. At some point before Tucker and Sam leave, we will find an opportunity to share our thanks and appreciation with them and to bid them Godspeed. Stay tuned to future Messengers as plans develop.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support as we live out our mission to be and make disciples of Christ, in response to God’s grace. As stated above, with every change comes both grief and opportunity. Even as we acknowledge our grief, we look forward with hopeful anticipation to the new opportunities God already has in store for us.
